I have just started taking Zoloft 25mg I have done alot of research but nothing comes up for breastfeeding a toddler while on this drug. I will admit that i have started feeling so much better, and have been able to be a more active part of my daughers (23 months) life. Any experience you may have while on this drug and breastfeeding is very welcomed. Thank you.

The Zoloft Prescribing Information says that there aren't enough studies to determine how much medication gets into human milk in nursing mothers. All it says is to use caution when taking it. Sorry there is no conclusive evidence to say Yes or No to your question, most drugs just don't have enough clincal safety studies in Pregnant and Nursing mothers b/c no mother wants to sign up for an elective study! For all these medications, unless it is specifically contraindicated, the benefit should outweigh the risk when deciding to take it while pregnant or nursing. It does sound like this is the case with you so I would keep taking it but remember, all medications will be found in human milk, so you may want to go ahead and move her to formula just to be on the very safe side. But the decision is entirely up to you. Good luck!

Zoloft is the "best drug choice so far". It has a low, low transfer rate to breastmilk (17-173 ug/liter) in mothers taking up to 150 mg/day. In one excellent study of 11 mother/infant pairs, the zoloft was undetectable in 7 of the 11 breastfeeding infants' serum and minimal in the other infants. In two other studies of one and three mother/infant pairs respectively, zoloft was undetectable in the plasma of all 4 infants. A theoretical concern with Zoloft is that some babies may not gain weight as rapidly or as well when breastfed by moms on Zoloft; so weight gain should be monitored and dosage tweaked as necessary.

Wow 23 months sounds a little old to still be breastfeeding alot of people I know stop at like 6 months at least before they are a year old.

If you are worried, stop breastfeeding your daughter. She is almost 2, she will be fine on milk. Most people I know stopped breastfeeding at around 12 months.

If I were you I would not take the chance especially because your child is old enough to stop nursing. Ween your daughter and then take the medication.

anything you put into your body will be passe on to your child through your breastmilk, but I really think at 23 months, she should be totally weaned. there's probably no research because there are very few that age that still breastfeed. did you ask your doctor about the possible effects?

does our doctor know you are breastfeeding? Any meds you take can be passed to your baby? Talk to your doctor and the baby's doctor. seems a little irresponsible to me, although I'm glad you feel better, but your main concern should be that innocent child.

I took zoloft (50mg) and breastfed for over a year and my son is just fine. their were no side effects and no withdrawls when I weaned him. DO NOT STOP TAKING THE MEDICATION W/O TALKING TO YOUR DR!!!!
