G'day

If you come to Melbourne, this is what you'll get:
1. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
2. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
3. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
4. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
5. Night Life... hmmmm... I'll say the centre of nite activities will be Crown Casino and Docklands. Altho there are still plenty of cafe's and clubs scattered around the suburbs as well.
9. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc.

Running out of ideas, but I hope that I can at least give you some more informations that have been provided by the answerers before me.

Good luck and welcome to Australia :)

There is no one "best place" to visit, there are so many. Is there a "best place" in Europe or the USA? I have been all over Australia and there is something to recommend anywhere you mention. Where to go depends on your interests and your budget. I would start with a few days in Sydney then go to Uluru and Alice Springs or the Barrier Reef or Hobart and Tasmania. (I have now insulted everywhere I haven't mentioned).

I've lived here for 45 years in every State and Territory and am still finding strange and wonderful places I haven't seen before.

By the look of your avatar and username you like a bit of the old chilly weather. So the Snowy Mountains ski resorts in July -August, maybe Canberra & Tasmania at the same time (low season = less expensive for Tassie) Take a look at the Great Ocean Road and enjoy the roading 40s winds which go in circles around Antarctica. Further south, the frenzied fifties, screaming sixties and the shrieking seventies.

You chooze!

Sydney: Very cosmolpolitan, fab food, great climate, fantastic skyline, the Opera House and Bridge. Great museums and art. It's possible to walk from Split Bridge to Manly and have a beach picnic on the way - all within reach of the city centre.

Tasmania: Wallabies everywhere, lovely national parks, duck-billed platypus, deserted white sand beaches, penguins.... idyllic.

PS Kakadu also very good, but don't look for it in WA as it's in Northern Territory!

I think either Victoria, because of all it's lush greenery and beautiful wildlife, or Queensland, because of all the sun and breathtaking coast. In Queensland I would either go to Noosa (a few hours north of Brisbane) or Port Douglas (near Cairns). Both are very pretty. Just don't go to Queensland in our summer because it is unbearably hot and there are sometimes cyclones. In Victoria go to Melbourne, the Dandenongs, the surf coast, and Geelong. I hope this helps.

Adelaide, capital of South Australia. Quite different from everywhere else in Australia and much more open and frinedly. The locals say it's because there were never any convicts sent there.
