My friend has a 5 month old daughter, and her boyfriend is leaving them both today and going out-of-state because he relapsed on drugs and his family won't assist her. He's taking the only car they had and now she doesn't have a way to drive to work, or pay for rent or any daycare or anything like that. How can she get assistance with those?

Your local DHS or Department of Human Services Chapter can help assist in many of those things (and more). Depending on what state you live in you can get everything from assistance in housing, food stamps, T.E.A. (which is basically and allowence of money every month), and much more.

Call the local Housing Authority office and ask if they are taking applications-they may not have an open wait list. If they are taking apps, she will need to go down and apply for Sec 8/Housing Choice Vouchers and Public Housing if available. (have social sec cards and birth certs for everyone along with recent pay stubs for her). She also needs to call the local dept of Social Services and ask to talk to an intake worker. Most big offices have one person to process incoming requests for assitance. She will need to get an appointment to apply for services such as food stamps, day care assistance, possibly TANF (may not qualify depending on her income).

In both cases she will likely be getting appointments to come back in a week or more to do an application and another week or more before getting help. Our local HA has an 18-24 month wait for services and takes apps one day per year. The big thing is follow through on the appointments-most services now involve a wait. In the mean time she can go to a non-profit such as the Salvation Army to request emergency assistance. It may not be much, but few places would pay all her bills. The sad truth is she may have to do some serious belt tightening in the next few months and nonessential items like computers, cell phones, and cable can go.

Check with the county health department, housing authority. Being a single mother will get her preferential treatment by the housing authority, and possibly into a home within 3 weeks.

Also, tell her to file for Section 8. They will assist her in finding the funding to get into an actual house of her own, and pay half the rent, while at the end, she will own the home.

She should call the Child and Family Services in her area immediately. (Listed in the Government section of the phone book under State:Public Health and Human Services)

There are federal and state programs to help people with rent. Sometimes the waiting list is pretty long, so I recommend filing for food stamps and cash assistance because TANF rules allow agencies to give emergency funds before her paperwork is all the way processed.

TANF will also file child support enforcement paperwork on the father of the child.

Also, the WIC hotline 1-800-433-4298 should be able to give her names of other resources to get help. WIC (Women Infants and Children) can give her food vouchers for formula (or regular food if she is nursing: will include milk, eggs, cheese, and cereal).

If your in Australia... Anglicare, Salvos ect, will help in the short term. They'll pay your rent once for you, and give you food hampers... In the long term, you need govt housing, apply at the dept of houseing. You may need to move out west for immediate houseing, or sit on a long waiting list, for suburban. Go to centrelink and have your payments checked in accordance to your rent assistance, child support ect. If your baby's daddy dont work, they'll give you like $6 of his dole. So thats no good. You need him to refuse to pay, or be found, then you'll get a bit more from centrelink.... If your in America, I think your up **** creek. You have to get a job. Or become a criminal to survive there. Good luck hun.

She needs to go to child welfare and have his wages garnished to help pay for his child's expenses. Call the police and have him arrested for stolen property - the car. Did she THINK before she got pregnant ? Where is her family? Why didn't she learn to stand on her own two feet before bringing another life into this world to support? She should give the child up for adoption so at least the baby can have a shot at a good life instead of depending on it's immature mother to provide for it's needs when she can't even fulfill her needs...a roof, clothing and food. I feel sorry for the baby.

Every state or county has programs for these situatuion. Tell her to start in the Yellow pages and go to the gray and blue section that county specific and look for welfare, wic, food stams etc. This will lead her to all of the assistance options she is looking for.
