JOP is an acronym for "Justice Of the Peace", and therefore the phrase refers to a completely secular, civil wedding ceremony which is not held in a church, does not have an ordained minister or pastor officiating, and is often chosen by couples for the sake of keeping costs down, formalizing a marriage legally without requiring a large or elaborate ceremony, etc.

Many times folks who are remarrying (who may have already had the 'big' ceremony at another time in their lives) don't have a desire to to the all-out ceremony. Thus a JOP wedding is seen as their best choice.

Good question. Best to you.

It is an abbreviation for Justice of the Peace. It would be a no frills wedding. Nothing fancy, and likely only lasting 15 to 20 minutes. Pretty much taking care of all the legality's of a wedding without the ceremony.

Justice of the Peace. It's a wedding ceremony not performed in a church or administered by a minister. It's performed in a court house and the oath is administered by the Justice of the Peace.

It means a church official (priest, rabbi, etc.) will not officiate. A civil official called a Justice of the Peace performs the ceremony.
