It depends on how much you're adding and the make of your computer. In general:

Bigger RAM sticks cost more

Laptop RAM costs more than desktop RAM

RAM for an older computer tends to cost more than for a newer one

Specific example: a 512 MB RAM stick for a Dell Dimension 2400 currently costs about $42 at crucial.com. Gig sticks for the same computer are about $80.
