I'm guessing you threw this out here just for the debating sense
of the issue. So i'll say that they are "nuts" in the culinary sense of the word, but legumes in the botanical sense. However, since i'm
in the south we love them boiled, raw, parched or otherwise. When boiled , they are best salty, and just enough to soften the shell. Good eatin' to you.

yes I did. I have a friend in Spain who grows them in his garden, pulls them out and they are little pods attached to the roots, a bit like miniature potatoes. He picks them fresh, washes the mud off them, quickly flash fries them in a tiny bit of oil on a hot plate, throws a handful of salt on them and, voila ... and they are delicious when they are fresh! Absolutely more-ish! Nothing like what we get in packets in the supermarket!

Thanks you that has cleared up years of speculation as to why the ones we used to buy from road side sellers in Africa were damp but unbelievably delicious, as another of your answerers has pointed out, not like the rubbish you get in supermarkets over here.

Yep...they are beans. Black eyed peas taste like peanuts when they are undercooked.
