There are legal limits to what you can buy but the manufacturers will try to confuse you. They are all pretty much the same when you take the maximum dose.
Superlatives like Max, Maxi, Pro, Extra strength, Super are all nonsense. See what they actually contain and get the generic instead. Advil=Ibuprofen, Midol=mainly acetaminophen etc.

They are all about the same.... If you don't already know this, tylenol is probably the most dangerous drug on the shelf.... in enough quantities, taken with alcohol, it will literally melt your liver. Ibuprofen products are now considered somewhat unsafe... they appear to have effects on the cardiac muscle.... much as Vioxx and Bextra did, but not nearly as bad. The least dangerous is therefore tylenol, taken at recommended amounts and Aleve.... both are effective. Extremely powerful pain killers that you get with a script, have some severe side effects --- extreme lethargy, and short term memory loss. So the less you take, the better. If your pain is so severe that you cannot have a reasonable life-style, see a pain management specialists for your script options.

Any of the OTC pain relieving medications in their correct dose and frequency are pretty good. I prefer Advil. My husband swears by Tylenol but it's not that great for me.
If you are in pain and over the counter pain relievers are not giving you any relief, you should call your doctor.
For example; pain from a migraine needs prescription drugs and nothing OTC is going to fix it.
