The Bhagavad-Gita is the place to start.

According to the Bhagavad Gita, the goal of life is to free the mind and intellect from their complexities, and to focus them on the glory of the Self, by dedicating one's actions to the divine. This goal can be achieved through the Yogas of meditation, action, devotion and knowledge.

The Bhagavad-Gita is full of interesting stories. This website gives great overviews of different gods too:

Hindiusm has so many fascinating stories of the gods. I think other religions are jealous of Hinduism's creativity!

This may sound strange, but I would start with wikipedia. There are often good links at the bottom of their pages with much more detailed information.
