all the soft surfaces must be washed, ie furniture, curtains, bedding, etc. the walls should be washed with bleach and water mixture. you don't need to repaint the walls.
try this to clean the smoke out of the air: simmer water and white vinegar in a sauce pan (50:50) until a rolling boil. once boiling, walk around the house with the steaming pot. this will clean the air of any offensive odor. do not leave this unattended on teh stove. burning vinegar is acrid and really burns your eyes, lungs, etc.

It's very hard, I've tried everything. I am a smoker, trying not to be, and my kids complain that I smell like smoke all the time. I had a landlord years ago when I used to smoke inside, before children, that he had to take a special chemical to get the smoke off of the walls before he could even paint. It's pretty bad but I guess I don't have a good answer for you just wanted to share my story.

You didn't specify where it was. Is it in your house? Then open a few windows and kick on the fans, including the exhaust on top or around your stove top. If it is in a car, then put a sock full of coffee (dry, lol) under a seat and if you wait a day it will be completely gone. If it was incessant smoking around clothing, upholstery or linens, then make it a point to wash them all.
I am a smoker, I admit, but even it being just my huband and myself in my house (which we own), I still go outside and rarely smoke in my own car. It's an awful habit, I know, and no one else should have to deal with it other than me. People don't know that I am a smoker if they visit unless they know of my habit - there are no signs whatsoever that I do so.
In the future, it's not out of line to ask a smoker to go outside to smoke - it is your house, apartment or car, and they can step out back or wait until you arrive at your destination to do so...it's just common courtesy.

If it's in your house, turn off the AC open all windows, turn on all fans and sprey as much air freshener as posible and leave it like that for a few days and take your family to a nice hotle in New York City

Now if it's in your clothes then well you are screwed!!!

Well it depends on what you are trying to get the smell out of. Most things can be washed such as clothes, hair and your walls of your house. A good air freshener will get it out of a room as well as opening your windows.

cigarette smoke stinks bad its hard to get rid of without going through drastic measures.

In one appartment we had to replace the carpet, paint the walls, clean with bleach, and febreeze in order to get rid of the smells.

Quit smoking. it smells bad and is also bad for your health. But wiping a fabric sheet on your clothes should help if your not willing to quit.

Yeah, you're going to have to quit smoking if you're the one actually smoking. If your house smells because someone else smokes, then tell them to go outside and smoke. Cigarrette smell is the worst.........puff puff.
