No its causes are purely physical. That it has a supernatural cause is not supported by any kind of valid evidence.

I truly believe that there are people who experience genuine stigmata. I believe that the power of ones own mind is what does it. Being so deeply religious and a passionate fervor is what has, through the ages, given us so many people who have caused and witnessed miracles, stigmata being no different. The problem is that the hoaxers are committing these hoaxes for whatever their personal gains may be. I believe people who truly experience stigmata don't go to the presses or make it publicly known about their condition - for sadly, our society likes to exploit and over-study such phenomena. These people know their lives would be disrupted immensely, and being such a religious person, they probably live humble lives. They don't want the rest of us watching them or believers flocking to them all the time.

I know that there have only been a handful of documented cases of Stigmata that have been accepted by the Catholic Church. I also know that it is a wound that will appear without any sign of tearing of the skin or tissue....it is a clean hole through your hands, feet or sides that a human cannot make or fake themselves and it's accompanied with a horrific amount of pain. It is definitely supernatural and I do believe it has happened. However, it's hard to believe, in this day and age, someone who says they're suffering from it. I'm going to rely on the people to investigate and reserve judgment when and if they ever accept another case.

Some may be outright hoaxes, and some may be "psychosomatic" in nature, i.e. physiological phenomena which occur in response to extreme mental states such as the ultra-pious induce by means of prayer, fasting, etc.

Ooh, I used to know! I do remember though that scientists cannot explain it. Skin cells are so cleanly cut that it just baffles them!
