Pros: It obviously hides dirt, is a durable floor treatment and is really hot in design right now. Plus, it is an inexpensive stone choice as compared to say trav, marble, granite, limestone, etc.
Cons: You will have to seal it because slate scratches to gray and can slough off if it is hit the right way. Also, you will need to have it guaged so that all of the pieces are the same height. Note that even purchasing black slate that there are going to be some color variations even within the same box or pallet. Also, it is not a good choice for an outdoor application where there are freezes and thaws.

The pros and cons are the same as buying a black car... Have you ever seen a clean black car? Nope! Black shows everything! (black clothing, black leather, black shoes, black tires) Think that one through. I love black and white tile floors, but after having them twice I will never ever do it again.... In the winter the salt from the sidewalks leaves a glazey look on the tiles. In the spring, you can't imagine what a tiny bit of mud will do on a black floor.
It is the same on wood floors that are stained dark. The dust jumps off the floor and screams in your face to look its way.
The pro is a dramatic look... But the cons out-weigh the pro fast!

Pros: It will hide the muddy shoe prints and other dirt better.
Cons: If you have ants or other bugs, they will not be seen until it's too late.
