Debt is bought and sold all the time. What many don't realize is that many of those debts are too old to be collected. Each state has a statute of limitations, usually 4-6 years, and anything over that time is non-collectible. Simply write them a letter that says "statute of limitations has expired" and that should do it.

Each state varies but I would guess that are way over the limitations. MI after 6 years it should come off your credit report, but the loop hole in this is if the creditor calls you and you talk to them and say anything along the lines of working out an arrangement to pay, you go back to zero date or day one. No matter how old that debt was/is. So be careful about that one.

Why is it that people think if they wait long enough, they just don't have to pay for something they bought? I see all sorts of questions here about the "statute of limitations" for debt collection...why? Why should time just absolve you of your responsibility and commitment to pay? Sure, they can try to collect...it might just be a waste of postage if you've skated for 17 years, but they can try...

Yes....whats worse is that the collection agency actually bid for your debt and will harass you until you pay..or destroy your credit rating. Depending on the size of the debt ....you may want to address this... if it is a substantial amount ..they can get quite annoying.
give them 50 cents on the dollar...they may actually take that.

If it is yours and you still owe the money, then yes, they can attempt to collect the debt. If they promised to "forgive" or write it off, then it's your word against theirs unless you have it in writing.
Good luck!

Contact the Attorney General's office in MA- it's their juristiction. Explain your story and see what they say. Odds are, if it's 17 years and the company hasn't considered it a "write off"- they probably were trying to find you all this time and finally caught up with you.

look into if there's a statue of limitations.. most likely not, but yah. if the bill is legit, don't bother trying to screw them, otherwise just ignore them.
