Moved from Nevada to Mass and received unemployment from Nevada but they do not have a state tax. When filing my Mass tax return it is asking for my unemployment but do I have to pay state tax on unemployment that I received from another state??? How do I file as I am married and want to file jointly.

Help???

Generally, if you received it while in Nevada, you would not have to pay Mass. tax on it but if you received it while in Massachusetts, you would pay Mass. taxes on it even though it was from Nevada.

As cash basis taxpayers, we are taxed when we receive the money.

Since you moved into MA, you are a part year state resident. When you file your tax return, MA would only tax you on income that you received while you are a MA state resident. Therefore, if the unemployment was received by you in NV BEFORE you became a MA resident, it would not be taxable in MA.

If you were a MA resident when you received it, it's taxable in MA regardless of which state paid it.
