This morning, I was in a rush and accidently spilled coffee on the copier. Now it's not working and smoke is coming out. No one knows I did it but they are asking who did it to come forward. I can get fired for this, what should I do?

Accidents happen, fess up and deal with it.

I would be suspicious about why they wanted someone to confess. Usually that means they have some punishment planned. I wouldn't blame anyone who didn't confess -- and I don't think it's a question of honesty or honor -- just self-preservation. Is there any chance you were seen or they know who did it? If not, I wouldn't say anything -- they can't have any good reason for wanting to know "who did it" except to place blame and probably punish you. I'm sure you'll be very careful in the future. I foolishly confessed to spilling a glass of water some distance from my computer that rolled directly toward the computer and caused trouble. I assumed that this sort of thing could happen to anyone. Instead, I got a lecture about how didn't I know never to have food or drink anywhere near a computer. Hello, has anyone walked around an office lately and seen how many people have coffee AND a computer in the same area? The IT department pitched a fit and I don't think I'll ever hear the end of it -- I have been labeled. So I say, keep your mouth shut and be careful in the future.

P.S. You do not have to incriminate yourself or testify against yourself in a court of law -- the Founding Fathers got it right when they wrote the Bill of Rights.

Well, if you are 100% sure that no cameras were in the room, as well as no co-workers saw you going in and out and, you are 100% that no one knows it's you-then keep it in the down low. But, if you know there are cameras; people are already eying you-then fess up, because then you'll have integrity in taking responsibility for your actions-and if let go,at least you were not fired for lying about fcuking the copier up and doing it.(stupid reason to be fired, even though it cost a lot, they could just take a chunk of your pay every time you're paid though). Good luck. But, things happen for a reason-believe me. I went through a similar thing, and I'm happy I was let go.

You had an accident; it should have been admitted to as soon as it happened. Its quite possible management is angrier at the fact that the person responsible didn't bring it to their attention immediately, before the machine was used and shorted out. (It would have been possible to take it apart and clean everything off and still leave it in good working order.)
You know what you have to do. Offer to pay for the repairs - that may smooth some ruffled feathers. If you do get fired, treat this as a valuable learning lesson.
And next time, just be open and honest about it right from the start.

Accidents do happen. Most companies lease this type of equipment and have someone in-house or outsource to repair these problems.

Perhaps you will be found out and perhaps you will not be found out BUT you yourself will know what happens. It is much more easier to go to your manager and just explain what happen. You can inform them that initially you wear frightened to come forward I am sure it will be understood.

They may need to know the substance that was spilled in the copier.

My advise to you is just explain your mishap and move on.

Good luck

Just do everybody a favor and admit that you did it. Why didn't you just tell your boss after it happened? It was an accident right? The longer you draw this out, the worse it will be for you. Look on the bright side, if you get fired at least you will be able to collect unemployment.

Unfortunately, you SHOULD have admitted it at the time. The best thing you can do now is to step forward and fess up. They may already know who did it and are testing your mettle. Businesses these days have all sorts of cameras and snitches and other tools to spy on their employees. Fess up and take whats coming.

There is a very good chance that they already know it is your fault and are just waiting to see whether you come forward or not. Either way, you are well on your way to getting fired. Take as much sick time as you can to look for another job.

You're better off telling the truth. If your fired, you'll get unemployment, and the reason for being fired is not that big of a deal. At least you weren't stealing of participating in other malicious behaviour. I don't think you'll get fired, but if you do at least you were honest and did your best, right?

you probably have a camera in the office, don't you? It is better not to lie.
I think i would say that i did it, i would appologize and pay for the repair or something. Is the copier very expensive?

Fess up. There probably going to find out one way or another and then they could fire you for lying. If you confess though, you have a better chance. Accidents happen.
