We are driving from Calgary, AB to Twin Falls, Idaho to pick up a dog that we are adopting. I was wondering when the passport laws came into affect for this situation.

Entering the US by land does not yet require a passport until 2008. However, if you have an old expired passport take that along with you. But for now a driver's licence is sufficient.

I know if it was the other way around (picking up a puppy in Calgary from ID Falls) the US citizen now needs a passport to get back into the US (from Canada).

I am going to guess that Canadian citizens need passports to get into the US, now, also.

Don't forget to get all the paperwork (veteranarian checks, shots, etc.) filled out for the dog, too!

when ever you travel outside your home country you should always have your passport and one other form of ID, i know that now, congress has passed a law, that started in january 2007, that all persons traveling in ot out of the US, by air or ground will have there passport

abut the dog, i think if the dog is flown by air, the doo will be in quarantine for aleast 48 to 72 hours to get checked buy a vet to make sure the pet is safe , but by ground im not sure.

If you are driving you do not need passports this year (although flying between US and Canada now requires a passport) but I think next year you will not be able to drive across borders without a passport.

They changed in January. Everyone needs a passport to enter America now -- even Canadians.

Sorry for our paranoid government...

Yes. You now need a passport to enter the U.S. from Canada. And visa versa.

Check with the Department of State.

As far as I know, you dont as of yet. I know that soon everyone at the border will need one to drive through but right now its just for air traffic.

Coming from Manitoba to North Dakota you don't as long as you are driving. If you fly you need one, and i dont know if the dog changes anything.
