My wife did ALOT of volunteer work for an animal shelter with which she used our own vehicle. There was alot of driving involved. She kept track of her mileage. How much can we deduct per mile? Any other expenses can we deduct for doing this for doing this kind of work?

She can deduct her out-of-pocket costs related to the volunteer work. Mileage is at a flat rate of .14 per mile. She cannot deduct the value of her own time, however.

To cover you, I suggest your wife ask for documentation from the shelter for the traveling she did - if at all possible incorporating her estimate of the mileage.
You can claim 14-cents per mile as a charitible contribution and it is best to keep records, and backup from the shelter, to substantiate that in case there is ever a question.
You won't be able to deduct much else for this unless in the process she donated items - food, cages, carriers, leashes, etc - to the shelter.

Mileage and charitable deductions don't help unles you itemize. Do you have enough deductions to itemize on your return?

deductions are right around 40 - 45 cents a mile depending on where you live. Give your accountant this information when you file taxes and they'll take care of it.
