I can't run because my knees are very bad and my Dr. said I shouldn't run at all. But my trainer said that that is the best way to loose weight...What can I do?

First, get a new trainer who will respect your physical limitations.
---As for exercise, eliptical machines and swimming have both been mentioned---and both are excellent and low-impact. I'd try out an eliptical machine at a gym before spending the money on one, just to make sure that it is not too stressful on your joints. My husband is considered to be 40% disabled due to problems he has with his knees, and he hasn't had any pain or problems at all with our eliptical machine.

Also, if you are able to walk at a moderate to brisk pace, you may find that is enough to help you manage your weight. Check with your Dr. first and build up your endurance slowly.

If you are overweight try to slim down and you will notice the difference. Water aerobics is low impact and warmer water will provide a soothing effect on the joints and is a crowd favorite for those suffering with arthritis. Sitting down in a recumbent bike will help. Possibly a rowing machine or elliptical trainer might be an option because they do not jar the joints like running on a treadmill. The important part is to raise the heart rate.

I don't know how bad your knees really are, and if your doctor says you shouldn't be on them then i would trust him since i am no M.D.
However taking Aleve or Ibuprofen before your work out will help greatly. Also Riding a stationary bike is VERY LOW impact and great cardio if you do it long enough. Also Pool Training is low impact as well. I would also consider the aerobic videos like tai bo and ect.. Some of the squats may be out of the picture but do what you can especially upper body and core stuff. You will be fine.

Imagine for a moment your arthritis completely vanishing right now.

If, in a moment, your pain and stiffness melted away. And your joints all of a sudden functioned like a well-oiled machine.

Like a magic wand was waived, you'd be able to jump up from your chair and run around the room like a kid.

And imagine that you'd never have to suffer as much as a pinch of arthritis stiffness or pain ever again.

I know this sounds impossible right now, but bear with me, because sometimes miracles happen.

It was a gift from a woman on the other side of the world. From the kindness of her heart, she took pity on my suffering and taught me how to completely reverse my arthritis.

Today, I want to do the same for you!

Have you tried a glider like a Gazelle? These employ the use of the large leg muscles without bringing the knees into play and are vertually zero impact.

Swim laps. This is the best low impact exercise you can do. You can also go to the gym and use an elliptical trainer...your feet never leave the pedals, so it won't be hard on your joints.

I would try swimming and an elliptical machine (the elliptical is very easy on your joints but you get the same effects that running gives).

I know there are exercise classes and videos called "sit fit", or "sit and be fit", which can be done even by people in wheelchairs. If your knees are really troubling you, you can try that option.

Get a better trainer, walking will also reduce some weight.
