You should go to your local animal shelter/rescue group and find a loving pet that needs a loving home.
There are rescue groups for about every breed of dog imaginable.
Ask your local animal shelter/rescue group which would be the better dog for you.
Go to: http://www.mypetnanny.info/pd/index.htm Find a rescue group in your area.
They do match people and pets! Not only that but you would be saving a life.
How much research have you done on the animals you are interested in? It is very important that you do your research before you bring a pet home. Puppys are a lot of work. Do you have time for a puppy?
Very important make sure you get your pet spayed/neutered!! Each year, in this country alone, millions of healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are killed because there are not enough homes for them all. Please read the article on The Crisis of Pet Overpopulation. Too many companion animals competing for too few good homes is the most obvious consequence of uncontrolled breeding. Living creatures have become throwaway items to be cuddled when cute and abandoned when inconvenient.
You can help solve the crisis of pet overpopulation by spaying and neutering your pets. Did you know that one female dog and her offspring can give birth to 67,000 puppies. In seven years, one cat and her young can produce 420,000 kittens. Did you know that spaying or neutering is good for your pet, you and the community. Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives. Here are some common thoughts about why people don’t spay or neuter their pets.
As far as picking a name for your pet. You have to get to know your new pet and see what his/her personality is like.
Good Luck in your search!! Your new friend is waiting for you.

If I were you,I'd start visiting the shelters and meet some different breeds. This will give you an idea which breed would be best for your lifestyle. Once you have a definite breed or two in mind start searching specifically for those breeds at rescues groups or shelters. The name should match the temperament of the dog. Good luck!

Yesterday you said that Jack Russels appeal to you, and that you wanted something with a smooth coat. I love Italian Greyhounds, but it sounds to me like you like a dog with a little more energy that has a Jack Russel look. Your not thinking of getting anything soon, so you have plenty of time to look at the different breeds at AKC.ORG and choose something that really appeals to you, it is you that will be taking care of it so it is you who it will have to have that special appeal to. I would pay some close attention to the Toy Fox Terrier and see what you think of that, as it seems to fit what you are describing, but any of us could be wrong. Choosing a dog breed for someone else is as difficult as choosing who they should date. Good luck!

Check out the American Kennel Club website...they have a questionnaire for you to match you up with the breed of dog who fits your lifestyle. If you want small and cuddly...you'll get small cuddly breeds in a list. It's really great. We took it 5 years ago and have been in heaven with Boxers ever since.

Personally I'd go with a Whippet or an Italian Greyhound, they're easy to groom and don't smell, they're really gentle and calm. They do need exercise but if you take them to a dog park and let them run they will tire themselves out. They're pretty small, and lightweight so they're perfect for napping on your lap

I would suggest shelter mutts. Go to your local animal shelter and ask if they have any well-mannered small dogs. If they do, look at their small adult dogs. Don't get a shelter puppy, because if you specifically want a small dog, there's no telling how big it's going to grow when it's only a puppy.
If your shelter currently doesn't have any small dogs that you like, ask them to take your telephone number and phone you whenever they receive a new small dog. I've known lots of great small mutts that came from shelters.

I would try a Pomeranian. They are cute, cuddly, and easy to take care of. And Tango would be a cute name for a boy. I think you would enjoy this dog. Whatever you choose, i believe you will have fun with any dog.

I think any cross breed because they typically live longer and don't have as many health issues as pure breeds. I would wait to name the dog until after you get it and see it's personality.

I would visit the local shelters, and oick out one youo like, looks and personality, then give him/her a name. I don't think the sex is as important as the individual personality. I love the mixes.
