The best thing to do would be to have your kitten tested, then vaccinated. You will need an FVRC-P/FIV test. The vaccinations will be for the same plus a rabies vaccination. It might also be wise to have the kitten wormed. Good for you for being a responsible pet owner.
as for food, it depends on what your kitten likes. My mom has a cat that will ONLY eat canned food & one who ONLY likes dry. She feeds Fancy Feast (canned) & Friskies with soft centers or something like that (dry). Just be sure that you are NOT buying a generic brand or store brand. Those tend to be full of fillers & cereals. They will fill the cat up, but they are not healthy & they will make the cat have larger bowel movements that will smell bad.
Be sure to start your kitten on a good flea & tick prevention schedule as well. Frontline Plus is a very good product & can be applied to even young kittens. Once your kitten it tested for FVRC-P/FIV there will be no need to retest AS LONG AS YOU ARE SURE TO KEEP UP ON THE VACCINATIONS EVERY YEAR!!!
Good Luck with the little guy....

I'm glad the kitten is doing OK as he should have had his series of kitten shots by now. I think you must discuss it with the vet prior to neutering. If he is going to have a rabies shot that should be done soon too.

Be aware that it is not a good idea to have a bunch of shots altogether as some can have a bad reaction so you should take the kitten in now and give the FVRCP and then save the rabies for about three to four weeks after. Most kittens also need to be wormed so that should be done prior to the neutering.

Go to www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's articles on cat nutrition such as those titled "Why Cats Need Canned Food" and "Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food". You want quality, human-grade meat protein in your kitten's food and canned food for the moisture which is particularly important for the male cat.

Dr. Hofve also has an article titled "Vaccinations" which you should read before consulting with your vet on the appropriate vaccines for your little guy.

This website lists all the shots your kitten needs. Make sure he has his shots before you neuter him, most vets won't neuter without shots in his system for at least a week. Also your best bet on kitten food is Nutro Kitten.
Good luck moving! I moved 3 cats from California to Connecticut. Its a long haul.

Netro is a good food for cats , as far as shots i would talk to the vet if you can't get any info from the lady , FVRCP and LEUKEMIA then rabies is the main ones .

(8weeks) he should have gotton his first shot at 8 weeks of age for Panleukopenia, Viral rhinotracheitis, Caliciviral disease, and Pneumonitis (Chlamydiosis). the food i like best for cats is fancy feast wet and cat chow or kitten chow. you can go on the website at www.catchow.com or kittenchow.com to see if the food is right for your cat. And its not too expensive!
