I have a Sony 40v2500 LCD (1080p) and my current DVD send a 480i signal. I understand that the TV will do the conversion to 480p automatically. As I spent $800 on the DVD 7 years ago, I am trying to make it last as long as I can!

Additional Info:
My current DVD has component video output as well as optical and coaxial outputs. I am trying to see if it will do a decent job until the HD-Wars are settled and the HD DVD players come down in price.

Well you really didn't "need" that Sony either now did you? LOL

If you watch a lot of DVD's it might make a difference to get a progressive scan player - why you might even think about going to an upconverting DVD player. But before you think about spending the money, why not borrow a friends unit and see if you can tell the difference.

Ok I will say this very simple. How much did you spend on the TV nowdays that you just got with 1080p. You spent a pretty penny. And you are using a dvd player from 7 years ago. A progressive scan will give you a better picture with component video cables. Use the standard progresive and you will have no difference. Next think of this wait 5 6 months and see which will prevail. The bluray dvd or the hd dvd. Then think ok these offer true 1080p resolution. Just look at it this way right now your running a ferrari (tv) with a engine of a scooter (dvd player).

yea, your DVD player does not have 3 cable TV output RGB to your Tv

do not worry so much about the upconverting it makes a little differnce, but if the DVD doesnt have the the compont out put it will be like strecting a 4:3 picture and not have a 16:9 picture,

sorry some things just become too old

If you want to see 1080 picture...you'll need to get an HD-DVD or Blu-ray DVD player. I'd recommend HD-DVD
