I need a machine that will allow me to stay at home and exercise while my two babies nap or play

What about a treadmill or any other good exercise machine?

Anything you can recommend under $1000 that will hold up well.

A treadmill is your best bet. You can start slow and work your way up. Walking is considered to be one of the best forms of excercise. Look for a machine with a program choices like "weight loss", or "cardio", or manual. You need it to be able to incline at least 10%. If you just get on and walk flat, you don't get nearly as good a workout. I just bought a "pro-line" for $1400 on sale. It is usually $1900. Go to a fitness store and tell them what you need. Don't get it at a discount store like Walmart. Theirs tend to not be so good. Sears has some decent ones as well.

Elipticals are good machines, but many people can't stick with it. If you are out of shape, they can really wear you out fast. That's why I like the treadmills. You really have a wide range of options as far as workouts and levels.

Make sure your treadmill has at least a 2.0 CHP (continous horse power) motor. The people at a fitness store can match a machine to your stride and weight and needs. I would check a couple of stores if you can. Make sure your motor has at least a 10 yr. warranty.

Consumer reports had a great article on them recently.

I LOVE elliptical machines. I don't have one at home, but I use one at the gym on a regular basis and I think they're great for an overall body workout. There are some where you can even adjust your incline.
