I've got a kitten..somewhere around 8 mos. old..she has started doing a really crazy thing lately. She is going over to her water and food dishes and pawing at the ground around them and she paws the water dish itself. The problem with this is she is spilling her water all over the floor. Any ideas on why she is doing this and what I can do to get her to quit it? Thanks!!

She's pawing around the food because she's trying to cover it up, basically to save it for later.
As far as pawing at the water...all of my cats do that.
I asked the Vet about it and he told me that cats don't have very good depth perception, they have a hard time telling if there is water in the bowel and they paw at it to see if there is some there and how deep it is.

I had an older cat who started pulling the water dish around before drinking. I have the water bowls on trays and I simply put a dish towel down on the tray to sop up the spilled water.

I dont' have any idea why she started doing it. The kitten might be playing and I know my old cat was not.

she is pawing around her dish because she is trying to hide her food. my cat did this all the time. when she put her paw in the water, she was trying to see where it was. maybe try using a water fountain instead, so she can see the water running?

They can't see the level of the water and they are trying to find out where it is. Put a poker chip or something that will float in the dish and that way they can see the level of the water without fear of dunking their noses in it.

My dog does this when he is too hot. You can buy weighted cat dishes, or just put a clean heavy rock in the water to hold down the dish.

I have a new kitty I just adopted that does the same thing. My kitty is around the same age. Sometimes he paws the water and then licks it or cleans himself. I just thought he was crazy.
