its entirely up to you but remember you can always have the dates added later if you feel your tat is lacking in something but you gotta remember the wrist isnt a large area and you dont want it crowded

To me it would seem like it would be too much but thats me so what I would do is get the tattoo you have planned and when its healed have the tattoo arist draw the birth and date and see if you like it the way it sits and looks with your tat and if you like it get it tattooed right than.

It is a memorial tattoo, so do you need the birth and death date to remind you, or will the tattoo be enough?

As a person with multiple tattoos, each tattoo has a lot of meaning. I think it is great that you are immortalizing your grandfather with ink. I think that the dates would be a great touch, but its all personal. If you want to span his lifetime, then do it! I hope it comes out great!

I really don't want to wreck your mood for getting a memorial tattoo, but if you get a tattoo in a visable place, it can limit your employment opportunities... an upper-arm tattoo would be less painful and easier to cover at work.
Was your grandpa a sailor or do you have a particular reason for a swallow? I'd suggest trying to incorporate something significant into the tattoo. What were your favorite memories? What kind of man was your grandfather?
Portrait tattoos can really be hit-or-miss and depend solely on the artist's ability. (Looking at a portfolio would be crucial if you decided to go with this type of tattoo.) I personally advise against these unless you're willing to travel to someone who really knows what they're doing.
I'm sorry to hear about your grandpa's passing.

Dude wait until you have the ready cash and then do it. Don't do a down payment because this gives you time to think and you'll also not get hassled by your mum if she does find out you used her card. I think you should talk to her about it. But if not, then just wait until you have your own cash set aside and treat yourself. Just be aware she will find out sometime or another.
