is the xbox 360 hd dvd add on as good as a proper hd dvd player?

i know that the xbox 360 doesnt connect via hdmi but proper hd dvd players do. which would be better

The reviews I've heard of it thus far sound pretty good. Only thing that threw me was that apparently there were some models in circulation that were region free and now there aren't.
But yeah my friend who has one is always going on how good quality it is and everything so if you want one go get it!
