Don't you want to see the parade? I know it starts in the morning, but if you fly out in the afternoon you'll liable to miss it.
Tuesday is Parade Day. Technically, you haven't visited Mardi Gras unless you saw the parade and got some beads "the hard way" (i.e. caught them being thrown off floats, instead of off balconies on Bourbon Street!).
The thing to go for is the Zulu coconut shell. That's the most prized trophy of any Mardi Gras. I've got Zulu beads I caught on the parade route 30 years ago or so, but never a coconut.

Carnival officially begins in New Orleans on the Feast of Epiphany, or Twelfth Night - Jan. 6 - and continues until the midnight of Fat Tuesday - Mardi Gras - the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras" (which is French for Fat Tuesday) technically applies only to the day before Ash Wednesday. But "Mardi Gras" is also commonly used to refer to the whole Carnival season, especially the final frenzied two weeks when the most parades occur. The height of the party - including the most famous parades and other activities - is the last long five-day weekend, from Friday through Fat Tuesday, Feb. 16-20 (see New Orleans parade schedule below). Everyone dresses up in costumes on Fat Tuesday. It is interesting, to say the least. The best parades, in my opinion, are on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. If I were coming in for Mardi Gras, I would wait and leave Wednesday. If you are looking for a hotel room, check out Hotwire.com. They usually have decent rates for nice rooms in the French Quarter or Downtown area.

I live about 40 minutes from New Orleans, on Fat Tuesday there are parades all day, partying all day, the PARTY usually ends around 10pm to midnight because the next day is Ash Wednesday - the beginning of Lent. A Catholic ritual. The minute after midnight is a holy day so there will be no partying going on
pass midnight. Leaving on Tuesday afternoon or evening is up to you but there really isn't any grand partying that night. Enjoy the weekend they will be partying hardy from Friday night til Tuesday morning! Hope you enjoy your trip.

You can't go home on Tuesday! Going home on Wednesday would make more sense. There are a ton of things to do and see on Tuesday. Try visiting www.mardigras.com for information.
