I was wondering, are there any black people who are Italian citizens, or live in Italy? I'm thinking of moving to Italy someday. Specifically Florence, or Milan.

after 10 years as a legal immigrant in italy you can have citizenship, or also through marriage.
many others are instead in italy since their birth, and are the descendants of people that came from the italian colonies: eritrea, somalia and ethiopia.
but they are still a little percentage of the population.

In general, there are not many native black-Italian communities or people in the country. Italy was not a big importer of slaves in the colonial years, so you really dont see that history there. However, like most European countries you will see groups of people that moved there from former Italian colonies in Africa or as refugees within the last 20 years. Small numbers of Ethiopians, Sudanese have settled in Italy.

That said, Im not aware of any active racial problems in Florence or Milan that would prevent blacks or any ethnic group from living there...but just remember, Italy is of a fairly uniform ethnicity- 95% Italian of Italian descent, 95% roman catholic. So, dont expect a whole lot of diversity in the social scene.

sill me.
i guess they scared you about Italy.
when i was little (20yrs ago) we were all white catholics and Italians. now a day we have a STRONG immigration, people are coming from every where.
in cities like Milan and Florence people DO speak English, and you will experience no discrimination . I garantee you will be able to find any racial group you wish to spend time with.
Even in little towns , in the middle of no where, things are quickly changing.
about the guy who was illegal in Italy and said we are racist. you find dick heads everywhere. Italians are really blunt, we don't worry too much about political correct as in the USA. But as i said in the cities i doubt you will feel uncomfortable at any time.

Hello Ms J.

the best way you can learn about our sociaty is by downloading a PDF from the CENSIS web site, here is the link :

http://www.censis.it/default.asp

before downloading remember to sign in.

I guess the reports are in Italian but you can read them easily.

There are two elements in Censis’ mission:

* to unveil and investigate the basic themes of civil society, such as the evolution of the social and economic structure, the push to innovate, individual and collective behaviours, organised actors and intermediate bodies, the role played by local systems, and the mechanisms of entrepreneurial initiative;
* to place attention on the process management, policy making, the involvement of actors, the action of institutional powers, and the culture of government.

you are always welcome in our country
Best

They are few and far between. There is one female athlete (track and field, I think) named Fiona May (British of Jamaican descent) who is an Italian citizen because she married an Italian.

There aren't as many native black italians are there are immigrant black italians, but there is still a small population. You definately won't find any racism though, especially in the north.
