Are DVD recorders worth buying, or should I just hold on to my old faithful VCR?
I'm concerned about the picture quality. I've heard that there's no component input, so wouldn't the quality be about the same as with a VCR?
I'm guessing that the aspect ratio of whatever you record will also be 4:3?

Yes the quality is pretty much the same as a VCR and aspect ratio is 4:3. However, DVD's are much smaller and more portable than VHS tapes. Also, if you tape multiple shows on one DVD it is much easier to find than on tape.

I have started recording shows I want to keep and doing that on DVD's is much easier than on VHS tapes. Since I use DVD-R's for that and finalize them when I'm done there is no risk of possibly recording over them. Also I have a portable DVD player and I can use that to keep up on shows that way.
