I hear that to live in New York is like 1,000 dollars for an ugly apartment. I wanna live there sooo bad, but I dont know where a cheap but decent place to live would be. Whats it really like up there concerning housing, ect.

It's not as bad as people say. What most people forget is that in New York you don't need to own a car, so that's an extra $500/month you can spend on rent. If you think about it that way, the rents look a lot more affordable. There are some cheap and decent places in Brooklyn, not more than 20 minutes away from Manhattan.

The cheapest places in Manhattan are now in the $1200+ a month range. Most young people on limited budgets share apartments.

You can save a lot of money by living outside of Manhattan. Prices in Queens are often half what they are in Manhattan, and you're less than half an hour away by subway.

friend of mine live in chinatown in NY, and he pays about 500 a month. but the room is tinny and he has to share bathroom with few others. breakfast and dinner are covered ( very simple). i think it is a cheap start for a big fancy life.
