I believe many folks here can learn much about pure breed dogs by watching and listening to the commentary.
BTW ... I'll be there tomorrow (as a spectator) cheering my friends who are entered, as well as my favorite breeds.

I breed / show Flat Coated Retrievers. Although I have no dogs entered in this year's show, I'm really looking forward to seeing some of my flatcoat friends who have traveled closer to my home town. Sad to say, ring time for our breed is 8:30am - I'll need to wake up early in the morning to get to the city in time )-:

OK, I'm home from Westminster and had a real good time. Unfortunately, none of my friend's dogs won breed, but the top flatcoat in the country won for the 3rd year in a row (congratulations Cutter, you deserved it). It was nice to see friends and their dogs again ... and it was also nice to see folks that I didn't expect to be there. I couldn't stay for the group ring tonight as we are expecting a big snow storm in the area, and I had to go home to attend to my own dogs. (It's a very long day for all the participants)
You're right Bookmom. Flatcoat folks are very intent on keeping our dogs multifaceted. Our breed standard dictates that the appearance of a performance flatcoat shall not be distinguished in the conformation ring. It might be for that reason that our breed seldom wins best of show honors. That's just fine with me.

I hope your flat-coated retriever friend is doing well---I think that breed is in the ring as I write this.
Flat-coated retrievers have always seemed to me to be one of the best kept secrets in the sporting group. Unlike some breeds where I think the breed standard has gotten away from the dog's original purpose, a flat-coat's form truly does follow their function and you can see that just reading a catalog for a conformation show.
How many of the flat coats are also titled hunters, or in obedience, rally, agility, flyball, etc? or their parents are? I love to see that and I am so happy to see a sporting dog who has more than a CH in front of his/her name in the group ring. Titles at both ends means a sound body, mind and spirit---and peace of mind for a flat coat owner LOL My limited experience has been that a flat coat is cheerful and willing to do anything and is better off (like most bright dogs) when given something to do.
Please post and tell us how your friend's dog did.
As usual I will be cheering for some of my favorite breeds---the German Shorthaired Pointer especially---another breed where the breed standard insures that form follows function and many dogs have titles "at both ends". I have a GSP and although no close relatives will be in the ring, many of the kennels represented contributed to my wonderful dog. (My hubby calls them "cousins" and an "inlaws."LOL)
The Labradors should be interesting because there are so many related dogs---sibs and half-sibs, even sires and offspring.
In the hounds I always cheer for the Otterhound---take a look and you'll see why. And the Irish Wolfhound.
I hope you had fun and report back!

I am attending both as a spectator and as a competitor. It is my third year with my championed Golden Retriever, and I am extremely excited!
I am attending as a spectator as my PBGV breeder is showing for the tenth time this year!! I will be bringing home a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen this summer and I cannot wait to see my breeder and her fine dogs in action!!
It's gonna be great!!
ETA: Miss Ginger is NOT my show Golden. I have two goldens, both were show, and then I retired Ginger. My other Golden, a male, is a true Golden-coated Golden.
Geesh, some people are such jerks.

I'm waiting for a friend standing ringside to call me with the Siberian results as we speak. :) I'll be glued to the TV both days.
This year, just about everyone I know is there except me! :(
Have fun tomorrow!
ADDED: Just got the call -- my friend's b itch took the breed! Now I'll really have someone to root for tonight!

Miss Ginger, how will your golden retriever be competing if she is spayed? Hmm....
Anyhow, I'll be watching it tonight, a Swiss Mountain Dog from my friend's litter will be in the working group, I'll be cheering him on.
