I am sorry, but the only explanation I can think of is that you could not handle life. You are too weak to live without faithful beliefs. That is not such a bad thing, you are happy now and that is all that matters, as long as you do not enforce your beliefs on others.

You are a creation of God. He made you to desire to believe in him. When you do not quench this desire you were miserable.
My husband has an atheist friend who is the most miserable person I know. Years ago he used be agnostic and he wasn't so bad. But since all these religious wars going on now he hates ALL religion. And he's the most bitter man I know and he is miserable.
I pray for him a lot.

The power of faith can have the strongest effect on life. Why do people blow themselves up in crowded markets in other countries? Faith. The power of faith can turn a life 180 degrees. Faith has this effect because it gives people a reason to believe, a reason to go on, and a reason for hope. Faith gives us a drive and reason to go on. Without faith in God, you lost faith in life as well.

Some people can't handle reality and need something to believe in. I believe in my own power to change my life, attitude, and outlook on life. Religion is a crutch that a lot of people still need.

We are born spiritually incomplete. We broke our relationship with GOD in the garden of Eden. We have a GOD sized hole on our soul that needs to be plugged into the spirit of GOD to fill it up.

You talk about taking one set a beliefs and then changing to another...but have you found your Self?

Do you know who and what you are?

As for the psychology of the difference - atheism tends to be very dry...the spice and juice in life is gone. Eventhough blind belief and fantasy is not the way to go...the sense of the magical and mystical in life tends to have a lot of juice.

We have human needs to love and be recognized for our devotion. Not everyone can handle reality. It's nothing too exciting.

You can't just decide to believe in something. You either believe in something or you don't. Live what you believe. We all have to find our truths and listen to them. I am an atheist btw.
