Jockeys Pants

They are actually NOT called jodphurs or breeches, they are very different and are referred to as "jockey pants" or "jock pants."

Basically they are the same material as the silks, just white pants that are almost weightless.Nothing at all like jodphurs or breeches. You can see many win pics of jockeys in their pants on my website www.pennyroyalstables.com

The word for pants worn by jockeys is "jodhpurs" They were named after the city of Jodhpur in India. I will paste a link for further information.

The word jodhpurs owes its etymology to this city. (riding breeches, cut at the hips but tight fitting from knee to ankle, usually worn while riding horses or playing polo).

Jodphurs and breeches are quite similar looking, but jodphurs are created so they fit snugly OVER riding boots, whereas breeches are tighter and shorter, so they fit snugly INSIDE riding boots. Jockeys wear a special kind of breeches. Check out the Tally Ho website to see difference, prices and the like.

If they cover the whole leg down to the ankle then they are jodhpurs. If they stop just below the knee then they are breeches (or britches).

As for the person that said the whole outfit is called the silks, that is rubbish. The silks refer to the jacket and hat cover only, as they used to be made from silk.

It's jodhpurs. These are breeches for horseback riding, loose above the knees and fitting closely below the knees.
