take him to a party store and have a budget. let him pick a theme and help him buy balloons, games, decorations, and maybe goodie bags and little prizes fore him to fill them with. then buy a cake and drinks and snacks.

I don't know what facilities your local YMCA has. They often have inexpensive packages. We had my 5 year old's party our local YMCA, it has an Adventure Zone playroom (tunnels, etc. like a McDonald's playland) and another room for cake and ice-cream. It was $30/hr, which for a 2 hour party was awesome! We had to pull the kids out. Some can do swim parties or you can use the gym for basketball, kickball, etc. Check if it is available if you are a non-member. We are looking for ideas for his 6th birthday: movie theatre packages, pool party, indoor bouncy house arena, and Michael's for a craft party are some ideas we are tossing around. Good luck!

Does he like I Spy books? For my son's sixth b-day we had an I Spy treasure hunt. I made up an I Spy poem for each room in the house, and when they completed each poem they earned a map piece and a little trinket such as a magnifying glass, a compass, a mini flashlight, etc. When they had earned all of the map pieces, they put it together and followed it down to our basement where I had a treasure chest pinata. They broke open the pinata to find rubber snakes and another map leading to our attic! I had used brown paper (and a very artistic teenager) to decorate the attic as an Egyptian pyramid, with a "real" treasure chest filled with their goodie bags! The cake was in the shape of a pyramid and filled with chocolate coins and Rolos. The boys had a fantastic time.
Feel free to e-mail me if you need other ideas. I run my own children's birthday party business, so I have tons of ideas for you!

One idea we did with one of my daughters which people seemed to like and was relatively inexpensive was to turn our house into a movie theater. We have a bar in the kitchen which we turned into the concession stand (bought a big jar of pickles, some popcorn and a bunch of the movie-style candies from Wal-Mart for 88 cents each). Each girl was given a certain number of tickets at the beginning of the night and they could use them for whatever concessions they wanted. We hung up a sign with all the concession prices on it and we put up signs advertising the movies we were watching. We put our couches into two rows and the girls watched a couple of movies. They played some games and stuff before watching the movie.
Anyway, it's an idea and, like I said, it's fairly inexpensive relative to a lot of birthday party ideas.

Well my son will be 6 this coming October. I was thinking about Scooby doo, since it can be for a boy or a girl. What does he like.. what is his favorite cartoon? Mine likes NickJr alot and I even thought about that. He also is starting soccer this year and thought about that as well. Sports are always easy to do.. you can find all kinds of party favors for sports. Then again Chucky Cheese is good.. but it is expensive too. Hope you can find something.. did ya ask him? I am sure he could come up with some things too..LOL.. Good luck.

Depending on where you live, there are parks you can go to, get a rented bounce house and take if from there.
I did a superman theme for my son at a botanical garden which had tours for the birthday boy which included the small zoo.

Here are a few things I have done for my sons
Star Wars Training Academy- made simple games for the kids to complete, and they received a Jedi Training certificate at the end of the party. There are many ways to make safe light sabers as well for them to take home
Astronaut/Space Ship- Decorated the living room like it was space, planets on the wall, and dressed up as astronauts (I was a space alien myself) and they kids played space games and ate space goodies, made a moon cake (half circle frosted w/ white frosting and broken oreos to look like the moon) and had an astroid pinata, bought really cheap space toys on Oriental Trading website
Superheroes- decorated the house like a comic book superhero hide out. Had a spiderman bouncy and learned "super hero powers" in our training academy. Gave the kids cheap comics to take home
We live in Arizona, so we have lots of water parties too, fill up plastic pools with water and give them water guns to fill from the pools, even the parents will get in on this one. Just make sure they know to bring dry clothes (have lots of towels on hand too). I give them the water guns to take home as party gifts.
Good luck and have fun, I love my kids parties, I have as much fun as they do!!

Have it at a Park, Kids Love the Play Ground. Besides they can Run, Jump, play ball, take their skate board, Play tag, You know just being themselves. You can BBQ and you can make Hot dogs n Hamburgers, chips and drinks. All kids likes a Pinata, They get a chance to Swing at it. Besides it should be a nice day at the park.
