back in the 80's and early 90's the Taste of Chicago used to be alot of fun. The crowds were big but not as big as they are now. Now it is ridiculous....it is shoulder to shoulder and you have to fight through a crowd of people to get to most food booths.
Also, back in the day, the portions were much smaller. They were actual tastes of the food which meant that you could actually taste alot of different things before filling up. Now, each booth may have one taste size portion and if you are lucky that one item may be the thing you were looking forward to trying. If not, you will have to pay $5-$8 dollars for a full size portion. My wallet and appetite won't allow for more than 2 or 3 of those.
I highly suggest driving 90 minutes north to Milwaukee and going to SUMMERFEST! Not only is there many different food items to sample, but the place has Music Galore. The Marcus Amplitheatre has a big concert every night. I saw Pearl Jam in 1998, No Doubt in 1999 and James Taylor in 2005. Also, there are at least 8 stages around the premises with free concerts with very good musicians such as INXS, collective soul, Sammy Hagar, Goo Goo Dolls, Phantasia Barino and the list goes onand on and on.
Also, there are tons of random exhibits and exhibitions taking place in different areas. My girlfriend and I stumbled upon the Miss Teen Wisconsin Finals and watched that for a while. Also, we watched the Outdoor dog games which had dock-jumping and vertical leap as seen on ESPN.
Also, there is a whole amusement park attached tot he facilities with roller coasters and other rides and a gondola which takes you over the entire grounds.
And my favorite event is the golf driveing competition. For $5 you get to hit 3 balls onto a tiny island green in a small lake about 100 yards away and if you get a hole in one you win $100K or something.
Check out the link. You will love Summerfest!

When the Taste of Chicago was first born, it was called ChicagoFest and the idea behind it was to give everyone a chance to sample the incredible array of fantastic restaurants in Chicago. You could find everything there from turtle soup to borscht to cannoli and from five star restaurants on down to local neighborhood treasures. It truly was something special, because it gave you a chance to try things you might never have otherwise. Now, it's so watered down and it seems like the majority of the food available is stuff I can get any time, just about anywhere -- pizza, burgers, ribs, ice cream -- your basic food court fare. Sometimes we go if we have nothing else better to do, but otherwise, it's just not worth it to me.

Like another poster said, Chicagofest, sample the key items at Chicago restaurants. At the end of the 90's it got "stale". I haven't been in years. We call it The WASTE. If you are looking for entire summer events---hit the neighborhood festivals. Taste of Lincoln, Goose Island...etc.

Taste of Chicago is just OK in my mind. Like you said, not enough variety nor unique restaurant/food. And there are way to many people. I really prefer Summer Fest up in Milwaukee. It runs about the same time as the Taste.

I don't think it would be healthy to do all summer long. That is a long time with chemical toilets and no washing facilities for food preparation places.

It's a lot of fun. But I don't think it would be as successful if it was all summer long.
