They are really nice people, and have been dating their son for a while now, and I still get a shy and quiet around them?????
They are a different race than I am. Can that possibly be it?

Could be & that is something you need to look within yourself to find out the answer.

Maybe because you're so focused on trying to impress them, you're afraid to make any mistake whatsoever. And the fact that they are from a different race implies to you that they have different culture, and that what you normally do might offend them after some fashion. So, what you end up doing is just avoid doing that many things with them. Which makes you shy around his family.

If they have never made you feel like the racial difference doesn't matter then yes that could be it. Don't you feel like you have things in common with them despite a difference of race? Maybe you haven't spent enough time with them to find out what these mutual interests are and enjoy them together.

Otherwise the problem could be just in your mind.

It is possible that you feel the ethnicity barrier is hard to overcome. Are you normally comfortable around new people? Could it be that you are not sure what he has told them about you and you wonder what they think? You just have to treat them like you would treat any new group of people. I hope that you will eventually become comfortable around them. Best of luck

Proably so but then again I'm not sure. It took me awhile to open up and not be shy around my husband's family. Give yourself sometime and you'll stop being shy around them. Just go up and talk to one of them and you'll do fine.

You are shy because you are wondering if they like you and you really want to make a good impresson on them. You don't want to mess things up because his family is very important him and they are close and you feel that if they donot like you , that might influence his feelings for you.
