I never have a big appetite but in the last 6 months i've been eating for the sake of it and put on nearly a stone. I want to get rid of this extra weight now and eating less is not a problem (I could easily live off 5 pieces of fruit a day if I was told it was good for me, which I know it isn't) so in the last two weeks I would say i've had a diet of about 1000 calories a day but i'm not losing weight. I also have an underactive thyroid gland, hence the name. Any constructive sensible advice?

I also have an underactive thyroid. I am on 125 mcg Synthroid a day. It took alomost a year of dosage changes to get my thyroid back to a normal level. Now I have lost 40 lbs in 4 months. My questions is, what is your weight? I currently weigh 266 (after the 40 lbs off). My doctor who is very active in my dieting and exercise with me due to the thyroid problems suggests that I eat NO LESS than 1800 calories a day at this weight. We are gradually weaning down the number as the weight comes off, but every body has a specific number of calories needed daily just to maintain body function. I would be sure your thyroid level is where it should be. I totally recommend anyone with a thyroid condition to keep their DR in on any and ALL weight loss efforts. They can give valuable advice and track your thyroid levels. You may find as you lose the weight that your dosage of meds can be lowered as well.

Hey,

Firstly I would say you need to probably get your thyroid checked out again, especially if your appetite is not great.

Secondly, you are not losing weight as your body has probably gone into a small shutdown where it is reserving your fat stores as it thinks its getting starved. Your calorie intake is very low - think you should be aiming for between 1200 -1500 cals per day and around 30g of fat.

Exercising will also help raise your metabolism and burn off cals - starving yourself and existing on a pitiful amount of cals a day is not the answer. If you do it sensibly you can expect to lose your stone in around a month and a half.

Good luck and make sure you see your doc first!

People who have underactive thyroid do find it harder to lose weight. You need the correct balance of nutrition. I have a friend who is on thyroxin - but she is still losing weight - 1/2 lbs aweek and she is using a diet and getting help and support from A1diet

You probably need to exercise as well, and make sure you're eating enough or your body will go into starvation mode and hold onto the weight you want to lose.

First get the thyroid under control. It can not only affect ur appetite but make you put on weight by interfering with your metabolism. Both synthetic and natural thyroxine supplements are available. That and diet should take off that weight.

I am just the same 4 weeks from starting my routine of diet and exercise I have lost neither inches or pounds. So my advice is keep going like me and we should succeed given time I'm sure.

well, 1000 calories a day is NOT very much! Your body might be in "starvation mode," where if you don't eat enough your body holds on to any extra fat because it thinks you are starving.

I would try to vary your caloric intake from one day to the next. For example, if you eat 1000 calories one day, try to eat maybe 1,300 the next. Vary from high to low amounts to keep your metabolism going.

Hope that helps.

If your thyroid is below normal range, there are pills you can take to fix that. Get it tested. That is probably the cause.

Go see your Doctor in the first instance, then you should combine any diet with excercise for it to be effective.
