To sin means to disobey God or to come up short of His standard. Therefore, Adam and Eve DID sin when they ate of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, even if they did not know the definition of "sin". They knew God disapproved of it, and that was enough for sin.
Their actions constitutes the first disobedience. The second disobedience was probably Cain's envy of Abel because there was no reason for Cain to be legitimately mad at Abel. The next sin after that was Cain's murder of Abel.

When God created humans, he gave them authority over the animal kingdom. (Genesis 1:26) But humankind was under God’s sovereignty. The first man and woman were to confirm their submission to God by obediently abstaining from the fruit of one particular tree, “the tree of the knowledge of good and bad.” (Genesis 2:17) Sadly, Adam and Eve abused their free moral agency and disobeyed God. Taking the forbidden fruit was not simply an act of theft. It constituted rebellion against God’s sovereignty. A footnote to Genesis 2:17 in The New Jerusalem Bible states that Adam and Eve laid claim “to complete moral independence by which man refuses to recognise his status as a created being . . . The first sin was an attack on God’s sovereignty.”

It definitely was the first sin, because God TOLD them not to eat that fruit, yet they committed the first sin, called " disobedience ". They knew it would be sin because God told them they would die if they did so. Read chapter 3 of Genesis, and you will see how Satan deceived Adam & Eve into disobedience.

Just because someone doesn't know it is wrong to kill another, doesn't mean it is not sin still. Remember Cain? He was still punished for killing his brother even when that law hadn't been established yet. So for Adam and Eve to disobey God would still be a sin. Ignorance, does not exclude one from the consequences.

True they did not know what sin was, but they still were accountable for the first sin. They were told specifically by God not to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge and they did, so they were found guilty. Because they knew they were not supposed to and they did it anyways. The first sin with knowledge of sin was Cain murdering his brother Abel.

Adam and Eve may not have had any previous experience with disobedience, but they seemed to understand well enough that they were forbidden to eat of the fruit of that particular tree. They convinced themselves to disobey, even knowing that there would be repercussions.

The first sin was the rebellion of Lucifer and the angels.
The second sin was when God told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit. But, Lucifer convinced Eve how unfair God was, that he was lying to her and she wouldn't die but she would be as wise as God.
These arguments sound very familiar.

- If you don't see the sign & turn the wrong way down a one way street......whether you saw the sign or not doesn't change the fact that you did the wrong thing.
- It's quite simple really.....God said do not eat the fruit of that particular tree. They disobeyed God. Therefore, they sinned.
- They knew what disobedience was and chose to disobey.

Dear Friend,
Adam and Eve were told specifically not to eat the fruit from the tree, it was the only thing that god told them that they must not do.
Genesis 2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
I hope this answers your question.
God Bless

I think that the first sin was the knowledge that supposedly resulted from the eating of the fruit. Before eating the fruit, they were supposedly perfectly innocent and didn't know the difference between right and wrong.
