I had a very bad cold sneezing constantly and a horrific cough.
Then for two days I did alot of heaving cleaning, moving furniture ect...
The next day I stilll felt ok, had a mammogram done and the next day I was in horrific pain. Can still hardly walk. I can breathe in with pain though, I sneeze and cough and cry out in pain. I have been doing bengay, hot baths, and Aleve. Did I bruise or break a rib bone and is it really necessary to go to a doctor? I realize nowawday doctors really don't do to much. I am not coughing blood up anything, it just plain ole hurts to walk or twist or move.
Can anyone help me or have had expierience in this dept. I was just at my docs about 3 weeks ago with the cold , he listened to my lungs and he said they were clear. That is why I hate to go back to him this soon. This all started about 5 days ago.........

Sounds like you've bruised your ribs.
If you broke them, then pain is really bad. My husband, who has osteoporosis, has broken a rib from coughing and he said that the pain was horrible. It's true, the doctors can't do much for a broken or bruised rib, then may prescribe a stronger pain killer.
I hope you feel better soon.

You're probably exercising the muscles between your ribs more than they have been in ages....coughing will do that. Your stomach muscles probably hurt too, I expect.
The problem is, that even if you've bruised the muscles (i.e., perhaps torn them) the doctor won't do much anyhow.
I have a bone density issue because of a chronic disease. About 10 years ago I got a severe cold and coughed so hard I cracked three ribs on one side, two on the other. The suggestion of the doctors at the hospital was to keep on with daily life, try to breathe as deeply as possible so as not to end up with pneumonia, and be patient.
Odds of you being able to break a rib right through from coughing are pretty much nil. The muscles hold them in place. But it is possible to put enough pressure on them from coughing to tear the muscles or to crack the bone. Even a small crack can sure hurt!!
As long as your lungs are clear, just keep getting better from the stupid cold and your ribs/chest muscles will recover.

Horrific pain? Yikes. If your pain is more than 6 on a scale of 1-10 go to your doctor or an emergency room as soon as you can. Severe, violent coughs can cause a lung to partially collapse, or you may have a condition that causes the outer covering of your lungs to rub on the inner surface called pleurisy. You should not have to suffer. Don't feel like a wimp for seeing a doc. You're sick. 3 weeks ago was a long time ago for a doctor to listen to lung sounds, so just because they were clear then doesn't mean they are now. Go! : )

You over did. And your muscles are letting you know. But to help you may need to take it a little easier for a few days. Take something for the coughing and sneezing. Hot showers for 10 minutes followed by 10 minutes of cold will take the knots out of your back. Keep slightly active though so that you don't get stove up as they use to say it. Good luck.

My husband and we're hit by a car, not our fault. We had 20 witnesses tell that to the cops. I was out of it for 4 days, wouldn't the hospital know I had broken ribs? Pain is horrible. Bruised ? Broken? Does it even matter?

The only way you could have bruised a rib is by hitting them really hard. I bruised my ribs in a few places falling flat down ice skating, If you havent full on fallen down or hit something really hard, you probably didnt bruise a rib. You should go to the doctor anyway though if you are in that much pain :) feel better

My sister had a hernia right below her rib cage. There are alot of intestines in the human body, crammed right up to your rib cage.If you didn't fall or hit yourself while doing something, then I doubt you broke anything. Lifting, moving or twisting can cause hernias. Either way, get to the ER, screw your doctor that won't help you. If you think there is something wrong, then go to the ER. It sounds like you need to go.

Xray is the only definitive way to tell if a rib is fractured (broken). If it is, there is generally nothing to do but pain control. More importantly, you were hit in the head by a monkey wrench? Get to an ER and have them check you out.

Get an x-ray. Broken ribs could be potentially life threatening.
