I don't think you would be bf and gf if you haven't seen each other in two years. If you had communicated with him over the internet and phone and mail, and he communicated back then maybe you would be. My best guess would be don't get him anything and just give him a big hug.

maybe he's a FORMER boyfriend?
Get him a card, and write something nice inside..
No need to go overboard, far as I can tell..
