My male cat, it seems since he was a kitten has a re-occuring worm problem that returns every 4-6 weeks. When I notice this problem, I mix one of those hartz worm tablets in the cat food for a couple of meals....and the problem returns in about a month, sometimes less. Meanwhile, my female cat does not seem to have a worm problem at all. Suggestions? What is going on?
Why just him, they both have the same diet...I keep fresh water and dry food out all day, and the two of them split one can of Cat food in the AM and one can in the PM.

I am assuming it is tapeworms since that is the most common type. There are different types of worms so hopefully you are using the correct wormer. The tapeworms are caused by fleas, so if your cat has fleas it WILL keep re-infecting itself, so you need to treat the cat not only for the worms but for the fleas as well. I would suggest Advantage, it is effective and works quickly. Tapeworms look like little grains of rice when dried and you will usually see them around your cats rear end stuck to their fur. If you are seeing something longer, you will have to go to the vet for diagnosis. Unfortunately the wormer you are using is not a very good one, usually just a big waste of money. Here is a link to the medication you need. This is the SAME meds your vet would give you:

You will need to worm the cat once, then repeat the dose in a month to make sure the worms AND any remaining eggs are killed. Good Luck.

You can not deworm a cat or dog in a couple of meals. You need to read the package instructions and dose your cat for the recommended amount of time. All your doing is killing off the adult worms and after the eggs hatch your cat has worms again.

I would suggest taking your cat to a vet NOW because there's a good chance that all the half treatments have made the worms resistant to the medication you have been using. If you cant afford a vet visit call your local shelter, they can direct you to low cost pet care.

Most likely the Hartz wormer is not working. You should get a GOOD de-wormer from the vet. Hartz and bio-spot and two companies I do not trust and would never give their prouducts to my cats ever again. I mad the mistake of doing that once and it killed my perfectly healthy kitten. Also, the Hartz may be a lower does medicine than what the VET can give you. I recommend you take your little guy in for a check up. Also, keep them inside if they are outside cats

What kind of worms are they? Our cat had roundworms and all we did was ring the vet and went round there to pick up the tablets for him. No need to bring him into the vet because we knew what kind of worm it was by describing it to the vet. It only cost $25 for 2 tablets - one every three months. The worms went straight away and he was off his food for a day or two. All good now though... The vet also said roundworms are the only ones that can be passed onto humans.. So i think for you a trip to the vets is in hand.. It won't take you long. And also get a flea collar for your kitty..

Chances are that your kitty will need the worm meds from a vet as the ones you are using aren't quite powerful enough. The vet meds will cure this worm problem right away, and they will stay away if you give them the meds as directed. Sometimes the pet store worms meds work, but obviously your cat has a case of worms that needs a more powerful kick in the butt. The meds really won't be expensive and will cure your kitty. Good luck

I had a cat who hunted, I took her to the vet and she got an injection for worms that lasted 6 months. Just to be sure I would get both done cause even if your not seeing them the female may have them too.

it can be that the worms have become immune to the medicine. but when you say 4 to 6 six after you administer the medicine, the worms return, which leads me to beleive the pills are efective on the adults, and not the eggs.
the fact that your male gets infected, and not your girl, he may be cheating on you. he may be hanging out with another cat, or he may be leaving his defecation in an area where another male (which might have untreated worms) is also leaving his 'do. he might be sniffing it, or rolling in it, thus re-infecting him every time.
try putting homeopathic remedies for intestinal parasites on his food daily. its harmless to animals, and you can continue treatement indefinitely, since its all natural. good luck
