It is explained in several scriptures. Genesis 2:7 talks about it first. He says that God made man's body from the elements of the earth, breathed into it his own breath (the hebrew word for "spirit") and man became a living soul. Three natures - one person. (That is how we are "in God's image" - we are a trinity)

The body interacts with the physical realm, receiving physical information.
The spirit ineracts with the spiritual or heavenly realmreceiving information about God and the spiritual.
The soul sits in between them, and is the place were the will, intelligence, and emotions reside. It takes the information from the other two sources, and makes decisions based on them.

When the soul works with the body, the Bible refers to it as "the flesh". When the soul works with the spirit, the Bible refers to it as "the heart".

Hebrew 4:12 talks about how the Word of God is able "to discern between the thoughs (you soul) and the intents (your spirit) of the heart". Those two words are often a good way to separate the soul from the spirit. While the soul determines the actions, the spirit determins the intent. It is from the spirit that a person's morals and motives follow.

In the Bible, “soul” is translated from the Hebrew ne′phesh and the Greek psy·khe′. Bible usage shows the soul to be a person or an animal or the life that a person or an animal enjoys.
Genesis 2:7--"And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (person)."

At death “the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit [ru′ahh, not neph′esh or soul] returns to God who gave it.” (Eccl. 12:7, RS) This life force certainly is invisible and powerful, and is therefore fittingly termed “spirit.” Scientists are trying very hard to discover this life force or “life principle,” but Jehovah in his wisdom has seen fit to keep this secret to himself.

Another kind of spirit found in the Bible is called God's holy spirit, the powerful and mighty force that God uses to accomplish his purposes and strengthen us in times of trial. It also guides and directs his heavenly organization. (Ezekiel 1:20, 21) Like the energy released by the hydrogen bomb, it can be used destructively to execute judgment on his enemies, but it has also operated in other ways that excite us to wonder.—Isaiah 11:15; 30:27, 28; 40:7, 8; 2 Thessalonians 2:8.

According to the Bible, the soul is the person or the life that that person enjoys. It dies when the person dies because it basically is the person. The spirit, however, originates with God and gives a person life. When the person dies, this spirit or life force goes back to God. None of the person's personality exists in the spirit. The only way that a person can live again is if God chooses to put spirit again into the person in the resurrection.

The Soul is our mind and basically the awareness of our five senses. It is the part that we recognize as being alive.
The spirit is directly connected to GOD like a lamp is connected to an outlet. The spirit also seems to control the mind at times independent of the soulish mind. For example *Soul* "She's hot and I can have sex with her right now". *Spirit* "That would destroy my marriage and my relationship with GOD through Jesus.!" Sort of like the old cartoon of the devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other.

The soul is the mind, emotions and will of a person. Humans are made up of three things, mind, body and spirit. It is the spirit that lives on after death. Jesus said from the cross, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." He didn't say soul. If you ever hear someone say that someone is a "soulish" person, it usually means that they are selfish, only thinking of themselves, easily led by emotions. That sort of thing.

My opinion is that the terms are interchangeable. The reason I say that is ,because once you spirit/soul leaves the flesh, the body is dead. What makes you you is no longer in the body.
