Easy one. Go to a garage sale or resale shop. Get some bifold closet doors and you can buy the hinges that are used on room dividers from a hardware store, Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, Ace. You can get the kick-down door stops add extra stability when you put them up and/or you can put some eyelets in the ceiling and use decorative chain to ensure that the doors don't tip over when bumped. Paint the doors or decorate them with pictures or even curtain panels or material. Just make sure that if you use the ceiling chains, make sure the doors are still touching the floor. The chains are for stability and safety only, not hanging.

You can get a heavy duty ceiling mounted drapery rod or vertical blind assembly and place wooden or other vertical blinds at the divider area. The advantage of this method is that if you attach it to one wall, and the ceiling, you can always open or close it to fit your needs.

The cheapest fix is to get a lightweight long rod, suspend it from the ceiling and then get draperies from Goodwill and use the cafe curtain hooks -- They look a little like shower curtain hooks but they have pincher clamps on the ends-- that can grip your curtains or sheet or lightweight bedspread or fancy material.

I have done all of the above for $30 or less. The lightweight long rod solution cost me $8.00 from Goodwill, including the drapes and hooks.

Bookshelves or cube units I find work best. (Cube Units are great for storing kitchen utensils etc) They give a solid divider, and gives you plenty of space to add some decorative items, books, media etc. If your looking for something that will divide the room while still giving an open feel, I would definately recommend curtains. Sheer curtains are a great way to divide a bedroom from the rest of the apt.

Some people use thier furniture to divide the rooms. However, if you want some privacy and don't want to spend much, try hanging curtains. You could maybe find some at a second hand store or yard sales for not much money. Hope this helps. Good luck.
