Metabolism is the rate at which your body burns and utilizes calories in the foods you eat...

Basically...and for a lack of a better description, Its the time it takes for a fire, to turn a chicken into charcoal and how the air seperates and catagorizes the bits that fly around.

Does that make sense?

It is different for everyone for no other reason than some people are active and some are not.

A body in motion tends to stay in motion a body at rest tends to stay at rest.

Its all physics. Kinetic energy and the like...

Your thyroid gland in you neck controls the rate that you use your food. As you said, skinny people seem to havae a higher rate of metabolism, heavier people slower rate. It is all that thyroid that governs how fast you metabolize your food. It is also said that as you age your body gets more efficient at it so you need to eat less to maintain. Excercise is also important.

Why don't you google or wikepedia.com the subject. It will explain it to you in plain English. Enough to understand, anyway.
