what is energy? how does it work?

there are different type of energies spiritual, negative, positive etc..,how can we use it to our self best.

Energy implies an energetic person behind. We say, that person has lot of energy or his energy is low etc... Therefore, the energetic person is one who possess his energy.

Whatever we see has many energies, electrical energy, hydraulic energy, mechanical energy, chemical energy. As per the science energy is thought to be not created,but converted from one energy to another energy just as electrical energy,by using ironing box, is converted into heat energy.

Ultimately behind all these various energies is a energetic person.
Electrical energy turned into light energy through bulbs and tubelights are not created on its own, but a person puts on the switch. But again there is a person in the generating house who is operating machines. Ultimately there is a person behind that.
There is a chain of cause and effect.

Similarly, God the ultimate cause of all causes and he is the one who all the energies under his control and they are working automatically just as when puts on the switch light glows automatically. The Lord has spiritual and material energies as well as marginal energies.

Svetasvatara Upanisd ( 6.8), informs , “The Supreme Lord has multipotencies, which act so perfectly that all consciousness, strength and activity are being directed solely by His will.”

In the Bhagavad gita(7.4 & 5), Lord Krishna says,"Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego—all together these eight constitute My separated material energies". "Besides these, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is another, superior energy of Mine, which comprises the living entities who are exploiting the resources of this material, inferior nature."

So the Lord's inferior energy is material nature
and superior energy is what we are,spirit soul.
The energy should be engaged in the service of it's owner, God.
This is the best way one can use. The property to should be used for the proprietor's sake, as Krishna says in Bhagavad gita(9.26),
"If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it"

Otherwise, if one uses the inferior energy for oneself it binds us in the temporary, miserable, material world in the repetition of birth, death, old age and disease. But using it for the Lord liberates one from the material world and puts one in the eternal spiritual world.

In your preamble you state that there are (for example) three different types of energies - 'spiritual, positive, negative etc.'

There aren't. None of these energies have ever been shown to exist. You can have negative, positive and spiritual thoughts; but that doesn't make them energies.

So, by asking a question based on an erroneous assumption, there can only be one answer:

We can't.

Energy is any mediating occurance between two particles. It is transfered by one of four bosons: photon (electromagnetic), graviton (gravity), gluons (strong nuclear force), and W vector bosons (weak nuclear force).

If it is not carried by one of these four in some way, it is not energy.
