Cholesterol tests measure HDL (the good cholesterol), LDL (the bad cholesterol), and triglycerides (a blood fat).

Sugary foods and alcohol contribute to a rise in triglycerides. Decrease your intake of those and increase your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids.

The Mayo Clinic has a very good short information page.

A lot of things can contribute to high tri's. First off smoking can raise them and also show lower HDL(good cholesterol). I smoke so I know(lot's of reseach). What you ate 2-3 days prior to testing can affect the results also. Did you fast at least 12 hours before the test? Are you carrying extra weight? If you keep your weight down, eat less sugar and empty carbs(white flour, sugar, etc), exercise and keep your bad fats down(sat and trans) you should be able to lower them. Try these things and retest in 6 months. Smoking will however raise them also so keep that in mind. We need to quit smoking!!! I know it's hard, I've been smoking for over 20 yrs and wish I could just say 'no more' but I need more help than that! BTW my tri's were at 218 in Sept 06 and I started a low fat diet and taking supplements and now their at 105 which is normal so it can be done.

Good luck!
Tori

High triglicerides have to do with cholesterol. You need to eat more fresh fruits & veggies, & cut back on fried stuff & also on the red meat. Drink more water; & eat more white meats.
You may also want to add Omega 3 or FlaxSeed as a supplement.

triglyerides are the bad cholesterol. to get it back to the desirable level, you must lower your cholesterol level for two months and get blood drawings exactly two months later. either go to a nutritionist or read information on the internet. note: too much apple juice in one week takes the fiber out of the diet, which is important.

try eating a lower fat diet for a while, drink plenty of water and excersize and you should be back to normal soon. triglycerides are what fat is made off and they can measure it in the bloodstream i believe so it just means theres a little extra in there.

I think one of the things that cause high triglycerides is alcohol consumption.

This is a measure of fat in the blood stream, it means you are eating to much fat/greasy food.

Low fat, lower fruit, more vegetables, legumes (beans, peas, lentils - skip the peanuts) cereals and grains.
