Starving is a bad idea on many health counts, but it is also counterproductive to what you want to do - eat less. Your body will slow its medtabolism down in fear that there is no more fuel coming in - it thinks it needs to reserve fat stores for a long haul of no eating so you will actually burn fewer calories then if you ate. Not to mention you're not spending energy on the digestion process and you will probably binge on even more food when you start eating again.

Now, as for a smaller appetite. Slowly cut your portions down. SLOWLY. If you normally eat 4 slices of pizza, cut it back to 3.5 slices for a week and ADD an extra glass of water (or seltzer) which will help you feel full. The next week, go to 3 slices and that extra water. Then go to 2.5, etc. You need to taper off of the large portions slowly to allow your stomach time to shrink a bit without triggering starvation mode.

The one thing you failed to mention is how big you are. I mean, if you're a teenager (male or female) with a growing body and you tower over your mother (I say this because you compared your appetite to hers) you are going to have a bigger appetite. The fact is a teenager can out-eat an adult any day. I can't eat as much now as I ate in my teens - I'd die to bursting !!

If you're really concerned, give a call to your doctor who can advise you on how much you should be eating on a daily basis based on your age and size.

The best way to make your stomach need less food at once is to eat smaller meals more often. If you starve and then feed yourself a large amount, your stomach is stretched to that size and you'll actually feel hungrier after you digest the food than if you had been more moderate.

Eat small meals often. Just enough to stave off hunger. Also eat more fiber foods and drink more water.
