It's all in the ankles and knees! So do some ankles exercises.

5 Minutes Rotatations: sit and slowing rotate your ankles to the right and than to the left (clockwise/counterclockwise).

Now the knee bends are simple. Two ways:
1. Lie on the floor facong upward and hold your legs in a bike pedaling position and lift them up and down slowly. You can do each leg individually, if you like.

2. Stand with your hands on your hips or stretched in front of you, legs a part and slowly lower yourself as if you are going to sit on a chair than raise yourself back up and repeat as many times as comfortable for you. Your knees are what will help substain your body a lot when running-so strenghten them and you will see pleasing results.

As with ALL exercise programs: warm up first to prevent injures!

Sprints are the best way to increase your overall speed. start out with 30-second to 1-minute sprints and just build up your endurance until your sprints get faster or you can go at that speed longer.

In addition, working your upper leg muscles will also really help. My track coach in college had us do a lot of squats and lunges to build the upper thighs and it makes a huge difference. You can do them with or without weight.

to become more efficient at running you have to run more. there are no exercises that mimic the running movement. training explosively with some olympic lifts will help along with some plyometrics.
