Yours would be a Third Generation Colt Single Action. According to 'Big Bore Sixguns' by John Taffin:
"The Third Generation Colts would only last from 1976 to 1982 when production ended once again. The serial number range began with 80001SA and switched to a SA prefix when 99999SA was reached."
A quick web-search reveals that the SA-prefix serial numbers in the 37xxxx range are circa 1980. It also reveals the rollover from SA-suffix to SA-prefix took place in 1978, so your particular revolver was likely built in 1979.

The post-WWII production Colt Single Action Army revolvers began in 1956 with numbers and the SA suffix. In 1978, Colt began a new numbering system for the SAA with the SA prefix with serial number SA01001. Yours is in the 16,500 range, so it is safe to estimate that yours is probably made at about 1980. Hope this info helps.

If you want to spend the coin, you can find out from The Colt Archives the exact date your SAA .45 left the factory, as well as where it was originally shipped.
Go to http.//www.coltsmfg.com and hit the Archives link, which will give you info to start your search. Just be forwarned, just like Colt weapons themselves, it ain't cheap, but......
You do get a very pretty "Birth Certificate" letter for your money!

I dont know the exact year or model type. But you can contact Colt and get a certified letter of production for around $25.00 or just fire them off an e-mail and they'll give you an "un-official" data sheet showing date manufactored, date delivered to store/customer, date sold, and location sold. along with all the pedigree details, barrel leangth, finish, grips, ect... for free and the turn around time for the e-mail is around 3 hours dureing the bussiness day.
Hope this helps.
