Visit Kauai's North Shore. Beautiful and not overcrowded. You can drive around the island in a day (not all the way around). A lot to see. One suggestion is the Waimea Canyon, see below:

You don't need to be. We have been there many times. You need to be flexible, and have an open mind. First get a book on Hawaii from the travel section, you can even use the library. Other than hotel names things really don't change that much. Oahu, and Waikiki has the most people and traffic but it also has the widest price differences. You can find sunset cruises from free religious and no meal to 1000's on private yachts. There are a lot of place for luaus, I personally like the Polonesian Cultural Center as the best, it is also the most expensive. Big Island, Hawaii is the newest and most rugged. You need rental car, fewer hotels, better for second and later visits. Maui is good for seclusion and honeymooners. It is a little more expensive and you do need a car but it is more cozy. These books will also list a lot of internet sites about things to do, you canalso get a lot of coupons for things to do and places to eat. Hawaii is one place where research really pays off. I personally would stay away from travel agents. They will steer you towards higher priced places to get higher commission.

You make it real difficult to give a decent answer without some kind of price range.
