If it is in fact a myth, why is this being fed to the public? Who has something to gain from making people believe that global warming is a reality? And what do they stand to gain by doing this?

Because the global warming isn't actually occurring like it was stated.
Global warming isn't a myth.
A myth is something that can't be proven scientifically, but does not mean it isn't fact.

Global warming is actually false.
Why? Because the earth is not going to warm everywhere as people who think "global warming" means everywhere will get warmer.

Actually it is a falsly stated "climate change" which is equally as devastating as all the stories you hear about global warming.

The truth of the matter, is different levels of our atmosphere are warming, and other levels are cooling as a result of chemical interactions produce by humans. (So scientists decades ago were correct about a global cooling, but they only had half of the truth.) As this occurs, it will have a profound devastating effect on climate, and the ecosystems that experience climate change.
These climate changes will cause huge loss of organisms, than the ecosystems they thrive are dependant on.
Not all organisms are as a hardy to climate change as humans are. Those organisms include our food supply, and the organisms that produce our oxygen atmosphere, and keep it clean.

Now this whole event is a myth, not because it is false, but because it is impossible to find one or two factors to attribute it to, scientifically. The only way it will be proven scientifically, is if we do one of two things:
1) Nothing, and let nature take its course. If science is right, no one will be around to say "I told you so".
If science is wrong, then no real harm is caused, and the environment will be in much better shape as humans controlled emissions of toxins into the environment, or
2) Do something, and find out that it was a problem that can be done something about-happy ending, or
We do something, and find out it is cyclical, and nothing can be done about it, and most of the species, are wiped off the planet.

now considering there is only one action there, that has a chance of accomplishing something before it is to late, which one do you think is better to do?
Global warming may be false, causes of climate change may be a myth, but that doesn't mean global climate change is not fact, and nothing can be done to reverse it.

For Frederick and others that doubt there is science behind the doubt, I have some stuff that will help you understand where we are coming from.

Here is a profile of 10 scientists that doubt man causes global warming. It is a 10 part series from the National Post. You can look the scientists up and read their words:

http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/story.html?id=22003a0d-37cc-4399-8bcc-39cd20bed2f6&k=0

Here is a Times UK article that provides a little science and some names so that you can read their words:

http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/story.html?id=22003a0d-37cc-4399-8bcc-39cd20bed2f6&k=0

Here is an article from Novosti that tells us the view of a scientist that doesn't believe:

http://en.rian.ru/russia/20070115/59078992.html

Here is an actual journal article to go look up that ponders the question of an anthropogenic cause of global warming:

Environ Geol (2006) 50: 899–910 by L. F. Khilyuk and G. V. Chilingar

Here is another journal article:

Meteorol Atmos Phys 95, 115–121 (2007) by Lin Zhen-Shan and Sun Xian

Here is yet another:

Pure appl. geophys. 162 (2005) 1557–1586 by M.L. KHANDEKAR,1 T.S. MURTY,2 and P. CHITTIBABU

There references and facts. Some from media pieces some in peer-reviewed scientific journal articles.

These are just a few of the pieces of the puzzle that make me believe that global warming is part of a natural cycle, not man made, and that there is nothing we can do to accelerate of slow it.

Climate is cyclical. We've had several ice ages in the past and several "warmer periods."

Nothing suggests this is any different...those glaciers melting...this is not the first time that has happened. This is all nothing new, except the hysteria created by politicians.

The micro version of the global warming argument goes something like this: Today was 5 degrees warmer than yesterday...at this rate, in 20 days no of us will be able to survive.

As silly as this reasoning sounds, its about the same as the global warming argument. Now, you want evidence that the trend won't continue for 20 days. Where is the evidence that the trend will continue for 20 days?

Or 200 years in the case of global warming...well, uhm, because it never has before and the slight temperature change and effects of that are nothing unusual, that's why.

Even if I concede that the earth is warming, I would add that it's only a few degrees over a couple hundred years.

What I debate is the cause and the reasoning for the cycles is perhaps explained in the following article. Sadly, rather than being put through scientific test, the author of the study will more likely be personally attacked. The scientific method has taken a back seat to politics.

In sum - sun goes through cycles, sun's cycles affect the radiation from space entering the atmosphere, these cosmic rays influence cloud formation, more or less clouds reflect more or less of the sun's energy.

I notice, as I am sure you have, those that claim global warming is a myth, present NO scientific data and no references to support their contention. Therefore, with respect to your question and the was you phrased it, their answers are non-responsive.
