look into getting a UK Rail Pass before you go.
i used one for 10 days and went all over Britain.
you can jump on nearly any train to anywhere in Britain.
make sure you go to Edinburgh and eat a Deep Fried Mars Bar !!!!!!!!!!!!!! just stay away from the Haggis though.

It depends where is Scotland you're starting from. It's about 400 miles from Edinburgh. Flying or getting an overnight sleeper train are good options. I've done the sleeper a few times. It's like going back to the 1950s - in a good way, but I suspect the trains are actually from the 1950s.
If you want to see something on the way down, you'll want to stay over somewhere on the way. So that means a trains or driving.
You have half of England to chose from - historic cities, national parks, the lot. It's difficult to suggest something unless you say what you have in mind.

Between Scotland and London is roughly a ten-hour drive so plane or train is your best bet. The train can be expensive though so plane is probably best. Try Easyjet, Ryanair or just run it through www.opodo.co.uk to find the best carrier.
For train www.networkrail
But if you do fly, bear in mind that two popular London airport s - Luton and Stansted are actually quite a way out of London and would require a 40min train ride to each.
Have fun - I reccommend Edinburgh to see and if you can, Aviemore.

"Best" depends on your budget, how much time you've got, which modes of travel you prefer, and what you'd like to see along the way. For me, best is cheapest, and in that case it's Megabus, Megatrain, or Ryanair.
